Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has confirmed The Elder Scrolls VI is “still a long way off”.

Fans of the fantasy-RPG franchise have been waiting for the next instalment since Skyrim’s release in 2011, and altough Howard has admitted The Elder Scrolls VI won’t be releasing anytime soon, he insisted its development has now become an “everyday thing”.

Speaking with GQ, he said: “We have hundreds of people on Fallout right now, with 76 and some other things we’re doing, but The Elder Scrolls VI is the everyday thing.”

While details remain scarce, Howard acknowledged that the gap between Skyrim and its sequel has stretched far longer than he’d like, but emphasised Bethesda needed “a creative reset” with a new project – Starfield.

He explained: “I do like to have a break between them, where it isn’t like a ‘plus one’ sequel.

“I think it’s also good for an audience to have a break – The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let’s be clear. But we wanted to do something new with Starfield. We needed a creative reset.”

Howard also teased his ideal launch scenario, saying he’d love to shadow-drop The Elder Scrolls VI without a long promotional buildup.

He said: “My perfect version — and I’m not saying this is going to happen — is that it’s going to be a while, and then one day the game will just appear.”

Bethesda recently shadow-dropped The Elder Scrolls IV: Remastered in April 2025, a move Howard described as a “test run” for future games.

For now, though, fans will have to keep waiting as The Elder Scrolls VI slowly takes shape.
