BioWare has officially reaffirmed that Mass Effect 5 is still in active development.

In a new update posted to BioWare’s website, executive producer Mike Gamble addressed recent rumours that the next sc-fi RPG was in trouble following publisher Electronic Arts’ studio layoffs, assuring fans that BioWare “remains committed to telling more stories in this universe”.

Gamble wrote: “The next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.

“We have a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out.”

The statement comes nearly five years after Mass Effect 5 was first teased at The Game Awards 2020, showing the return of fan-favourite character Liara T’Soni.

The reveal also suggested the story of Mass Effect 5 would continue the events of the original trilogy – rather than the standalone Andromeda spinoff.

Since then, BioWare has shared little beyond cryptic teasers and concept art, fueling speculation about whether the project had stalled.

Behind the scenes, BioWare has endured a turbulent period.

The studio shipped Dragon Age: The Veilguard earlier this year amid significant staff cuts, while EA continues to grapple with $20 billion in debt and an impending sale to private investors, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners.

Fans had voiced concern that new ownership could influence creative decisions, particularly around Mass Effect’s signature romance and diversity options.

Gamble’s comments suggest BioWare remains creatively independent and fully invested in the franchise’s future.

Insiders have indicated that Mass Effect 5 is targeting next-generation hardware, meaning it likely won’t release on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Gamble added: “When we’re ready, it’ll be a lot of fun to show.”
