Mark Bonnar has revealed he would be keen to return to the Assassin’s Creed universe, expressing interest in reprising his role as Blackbeard in a future screen adaptation.

The Scottish actor originally portrayed the infamous pirate Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Thatch in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, delivering a performance through motion capture that remains one of the game’s standout elements.

Speaking ahead of renewed interest in the franchise, Bonnar told the BBC: “I’d love to play Blackbeard [in a series], and I get really kind of jealous and annoyed whenever I see a pirate show.”

The comments come as Ubisoft prepares to revisit Black Flag with a reported remake, while a new live-action Assassin’s Creed TV series is currently in production at Netflix in Italy.

Reflecting on his original role, Bonnar described it as “one of my favourites”, recalling how he initially believed he was auditioning for an animated project.

The 57-year-old actor said: “My agent discovered it was a computer game… I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Imagine being in a computer game, it would be amazing,’ and it was.”

Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, Black Flag followed protagonist Edward Kenway and featured historical figures including Blackbeard. The game was critically acclaimed and received multiple nominations at the 2014 BAFTA Games Awards.

Bonnar still enjoys slipping back into character, adding: “I pull him out at any opportunity I get… Blackbeard is just, you know, he’s unbridled.”

Beyond Assassin’s Creed, the lifelong gamer also expressed interest in appearing in other major franchises, including God of War and The Last of Us, citing their strong storytelling.

Bonnar, whose TV credits include Line of Duty and Unforgotten, said: “I think anything that has a great script… is always going to be good.”
