Sony has said Marathon is still aiming to launch by March 2026.
Despite ongoing development challenges and a turbulent production history, Sony CFO Lin Tao reaffirmed that both publisher Sony and developer Bungie remain “fully dedicated to launching the title to schedule”.
The sci-fi multiplayer reboot – based on Bungie’s classic 1990s franchise – was indefinitely delayed in June 2025 following backlash from playtesters and a plagiarism controversy involving outsourced artwork.
In October, Bungie held a new technical test to evaluate gameplay balance and player retention.
Tao said: “We are in the process of analysing the performance against those KPIs”, adding that Bungie will make “corrections as needed” based on the results.
Marathon marks Bungie’s first major release since Destiny 2 in 2017, and is part of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s push into live-service games – a key growth area the company has heavily invested in since acquiring the studio in 2022.
The title is expected to play a central role in Sony’s upcoming portfolio of online multiplayer experiences.
Despite internal restructuring at Bungie – including layoffs earlier this year and creative leadership changes – development on Marathon has continued.
The game is rumoured to feature cross-platform play, persistent world progression, and a strong emphasis on squad-based objectives rather than traditional battle royale mechanics.
If Sony’s current forecast holds, Marathon is on track to release before the end of its 2025–2026 fiscal year, keeping it within the company’s projected live-service lineup.
